Whole grains are an important part of a balanced diet and it it is recommended that an adult eating 2,000 calories a day consume 48 grams of whole grains.
But what is a whole grain and why do we need them in our diets?
A grain (wheat, rye, rice, corn etc.) naturally contains three parts: the bran, germ and endosperm. For a grain to remain a whole grain, the bran and germ cannot be removed by the milling process.
Whole grains are an important part of our diet due to the nutrients and fiber they contain. The levels of these vary from grain to grain, but they all contribute to a well-rounded diet.
